Practicing Medicine in Remote Environments

Our Wilderness Medicine Program, housed within the Jefferson Center for Injury Research and Prevention (JCIRP), is dedicated to advancing the research and education of medical care in non-traditional emergency settings. Our interdisciplinary experts focus on translating field-based research into better patient care across diverse settings.

Research & Education Focus

One of the program’s primary goals is to advance the field of wilderness medicine through injury-prevention research. This includes studying community perceptions of risk, optimizing field assessment tools, and developing evidence-based strategies to minimize harm in challenging, austere, and high-altitude environments.

Program initiatives include:

  • International collaborations for high altitude illness research
  • Integration with BreckWild (EMRG 406) -  a 4th year medical student elective course held in Breckenridge, CO, where students are required to complete a scholarly project as part of the elective
