Inclusion & Exclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Patients 18 years old or older
  • Open and Laparoscopic surgery (as long as a GPOCUS view can be obtained safely and without patient discomfort)
  • Colon surgery (colectomy/proctectomy)
  • Small bowel resection
  • Scheduled/elective surgery

Exclusion Criteria

  • History of gastroparesis
  • History of gastric/bariatric surgery
  • Intubated
  • Large open abdominal wounds (including abdominal wound vac)
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Class III/IV wound class (contaminated/infected/dirty)
  • Emergency surgery
  • NG tube placed/present at time of operation
  • Presence of ileostomy/colostomy following planned surgery
  • J-pouch reconstruction patient
