Jefferson, through a partnership with Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome, Italy, has been the recipient of an Erasmus+ for Higher Education grant funded by the European Union Program (ERASMUS+ KA 107 – ICM - International Credit Mobility - Project 2020-1-IT02-KA107-078076). The grant supports student mobility for training and education, as well as staff mobility for training and teaching between Thomas Jefferson University and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Neurosciences/Neuro-Oncology during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years. All activities must be completed by July 31, 2023.
Under this program, the following opportunities are available for Jefferson students and staff at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore/Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy:
Student Mobility
The Erasmus+ program targets students in good standing. The selected students will participate in learning activities and attend seminars and/or courses.
Mobility for Training
- Four (4) residents (3-6 months) – Level: MD in neurosurgery residency training
Mobility for Studies
- Nine (9) students (3-6 months) – Level: medical students with a baccalaureate degree, postgraduate students (Masters, PhD – Doctorate)
As per the Erasmus+ guidelines, the amount of the mobility grant includes a contribution for travel (1 round-trip ticket per beneficiary) and a monthly scholarship covering meals/accommodation as follows:

Staff Mobility
Mobility for Training (Administrative Staff)
- 2 slots (1 week – 5 days + 2 travel days)
Mobility for Teaching (Faculty Members)
- 4 slots (1 week – 5 days + 2 travel days – minimum teaching hours per week: 8)

Selection Process
The selection of the applicants will be made by the Joint Faculty Council, which is composed by Dr. Alessandro Olivi and Dr. Pierpaolo Mattogno, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, and by Dr. Robert Rosenwasser and Dr. Kevin Judy, Thomas Jefferson University. The project will pay particular attention for disadvantaged subjects. During selection, the Joint Faculty Council will take into specific consideration persons with disabilities as well as the socio-economics of applicants.
Student Selection Criteria
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:
- Academic excellence - preference will go to promising students in their final years or who wish to pursue research in Neuro-Oncology and/or Neurosurgery.
- Two Reference letters from faculty of study
- The official language of the program is English. An understanding of Italian would be beneficial.
