Aims & Goals

Foundational Principles

Our decision-making process is guided by four foundational principles. Whether we are evaluating a research component to help develop, an investment to make, or an initiative to prioritize, every project we work on must be aligned with the following framework:

  • Eliminating/reducing the gap in translational research collaboration and clinical research participation among universities, medical centers, and affiliated community hospitals
  • Engaging frontline clinicians and patients in research participation and dissemination
  • Identifying challenges in healthcare delivery to guide and inform priorities in translation/implementation research
  • Making clinical data and informatics platforms research ready and accessible across partner sites

Goals

In collaboration with our institutional partners and research teams, Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) is working to achieve the following goals:

Leverage the complementary capabilities and distinguishing strengths of our partners and participating institutions to achieve reproducible improvements in translational research efficiency, workforce skills, and community engagement across health systems that serve urban and rural underserved populations.

Create a hub organization with infrastructure and systems that accelerate the movement of biomedical discoveries into real-world interventions and dissemination pathways that improve pace and impact of research on the health of local communities and the broader U.S. population.

Catalyze new research and clinical trial collaborations across institutions with a focus on understudied populations across the life span and both rural and urban settings.

Create, test, validate, and disseminate information technology tools that directly address translational barriers and can be adopted or adapted by health systems and providers with diverse technical skill sets.

Advance the integration of research into clinical practice and community knowledge that can be adopted by other academic and community health systems. This will be achieved through the development, adaptation, and national adoption of tools, methods, and models for frontline researchers, providers, and community groups that enhance the impact of translational and clinical research.

Specific Aims

To help achieve these goals, CTCS uses a variety of digital tools, best practices, and research methods, including:

Aim 1: Develop a well-trained, skilled translational workforce at all levels

Aim 2: Foster a culture of community engagement and team science across participating organizations

Aim 3: Include populations across the life span in translational and clinical research

Aim 4: Overcome identified barriers and delays while enhancing impact of translational and clinical research through IT and artificial intelligence

Aim 5: Innovate methods, approaches, and workflows in translational and clinical research
